Based at Arlary House in Milnathort, near Kinross, Perthshire, Lucinda Russell saddled her first winner under National Hunt Rules, Gunmetal Boy, owned by her late father, Peter, in a maiden hunters’ chase at Kelso on April 5, 1993, as a permit holder. She has held a professional training licence since 1995 and, in a little over three decades, has sent out over 1,000 winners, including four at the Cheltenham Festival and two in the Grand National, namely One For Arthur, in 2017, and Corach Rambler, in 2023.
In August 2025, Russell announced that she and Michael Scudamore, the younger son of her partner and assistant trainer, former champion jockey Peter Scudamore, had been granted a joint training licence by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). Michael Scudamore, previously based in Bromsash, Herefordshire, had held a training licence in his own right between 2008/09 and 2024/25, famously saddling Monbeg Dude to win the Welsh National at Chepstow in 2013 and Next Sensation to win the Grand Annual Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2015.
At the time of writing, it remains early days for the traning partnership, but Russell and Scudamore hit the ground running, saddling their first winner together, Dain Ma Nut In in a Flat handicap at York on August 23, 2025. In their first full National Hunt season together, 2025/26, they saddled 53 winners from 507 runners, at a strike rate of 10%, and collected £863,000 in prize money. The seasonal highlight was the victory of Apple Away, ridden by stable jockey Derek Fox, in the Listed Fair Maid Of Perth Mares’ Chase at Perth on April 22, 2026. The 2026/27 National Hunt season, thus far, has yielded 15 winners from 77 runners and £214,000 in prize money, such that they lie eighth in the trainers’ championship table.
