Ralph Beckett

Born in London on June 24, 1971, Ralph Beckett became assistant trainer to Peter Walwyn at Windsor House Stables in Lambourn in 1996, before taking over the licence following his retirement in 1999. Beckett saddled his first winner in his own right, Order, ridden by Glenn Tormey, in a National Hunt Flat Race at Huntingdon on January 27, 2000. He went on to saddle over 100 more winners from Windsor House before, in 2006, moving to Whitsbury Manor Stables, near Fordingbridge, Hampshire, where he replaced David Elsworth.

Beckett trained his first Group 1 winner, Look Here, ridden by Seb Sanders in the Oaks at Epsom in 2008. At the time of writing, he has since added 17 more to his career tally, at home and abroad, the most recent of which was Qirat, ridden by Richard Kingscote, who was a shock 150/1 winner of the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in 2025. All told, Beckett sent out 245 winners from Whitsbury Manor before moving to his current base, Kimpton Down Stables in Kimpton Down, near Andover, Hampshire.

Beckett has continued to flourish ever since, saddling over 100 winners in a season for the first time in 2016 and enjoying his most profitable campaign so far in 2023, when he saddled 133 winners from 651 runners, at a healthy 20% strike rate, and collected £4.2 million in prize money. Seasonal highlights on British soil included winning the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and the City of York Stakes at York, both Group 2 contests, with Kinross and, in between times, the Celebration Mile Stakes at Goodwood, another Group 2 contest, with Angel Bleu.

Overseas, Becket also has a raft of high-profile victories to his name. Highlights include the Irish Derby with Westover in 2022, the Prix de l’Arc de Tromphe with Bluestocking in 2024 and the Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Starlust, also in 2024.
